WAGS 15.03.2023: Curious Cuisine or "Cerveja With Your Tuna, Sir?"

 \

With numbers in favour of the Lagos end, Antje volunteered to organise the walk from Meia Praia. Here is her report.

Rod was in Spain, Hilke was nursing a crook knee and Maria getting ready for a holiday was having her nails polished in Silves, so only 6 WAGS  and an ever excited Sascha were at the starting line  at Bar Quim in Meia Praia at the slightly earlier time of 09.30 a.m.

The Starters were John, Hazel, Myriam, Chris, Antje and Yves, whose arrival had been delayed due to him having been subjected to GNR road checks just before Odiaxere.

Hazel was worried that she had got her fingers the wrong way round

Closer examination showed that she had got it right

So we left 20 minutes late which nobody objected to. Sipping a coffee while  enjoying the view of the sea was no hardship.

History does not record what he was before 1948

Chris stayed with us until the golf course when he returned to the starting point via the golf course and walkway.

Art, or Graffiti ?

We walked on  towards the yet again extended oyster farm and inspected the crumbling causeway leading to the end of the beach.

Causeway, Sparrowfart 27.07.2011

when it was still possible to drive across it

As only John had brought sticks, we decided not to cross the causeway but to retrace our steps, to walk around the little laguna and  to head thus  for the breakwater at the end of the beach. We had not seen many birds but maybe one lonely plover at the laguna. None of us was knowledgeable enough to give a definite answer to what kind of bird it was.

What bird is that ?

A catamaran called Lady Rover

At the breakwater, the warm sun decided all but Myriam to take off their shoes and return along  the beach barefooted. The beach was covered in shells though and fun was had looking for special ones. Sascha enjoyed her first swim.

Hazel´s colourful haul

We returned to Bar Quim on time for our booked table. Chris rejoined us and Paul also appeared.

Sunshade still down; this is his first lunch
In accordance with WAGS tradition, Yves was served his lunch first but then, entirely contrary to any tradition, had his entire caneca of beer poured over his plate when the waiter tried to open the large window sunshade and knocked the glass over in the course of his endeavours. Beer jus on tuna salad proving not to be a culinary success, so Yves earned a second helping of tuna and a second beer. The rest of us stuck to a more mundane menu such as omelettes, chicken and chips.

Second lunch and second beer

During lunch, Myriam entertained us with the tale of her encounter with a missionary in Cafe Gomba in Lagos.

He carried a very large stick and a very large Bible, spoke in English and Spanish (although he was an Italian named Giovanni) and declared to all who would listen that he was not a priest, just a missionary. Myriam earned merit (brownie points ?) in the afterlife by buying him coffee and cakes. A photo of him will no doubt be included in the blog.

Giovanni the Missionary

A gentle walk  in peaceful surroundings and pleasant weather heralding the coming of summer and we didn´t even have to venture onto the boardwalk.

Our thanks to Antje for a great walk. Googling Portuguese wading birds came up with this possibility:

that it was a whimbrel.

And our closing music, especially for Myriam, "Gabriel´s Oboe", the theme from The Mission by Ennio Morricone
