Who would have thought ? 2025 marks 20 years of blogging our pedestrian activities in the Algarve. Much evolution - some might say degeneration - AWW (1997), WAGS 1 (2015),WAGS 2 (2019). Sideshows: APAPS, Lagos COWS -and who knows? By next year we may morph into WADS ! The Hard Core is numerically challenged and a tad softer, but Ever Onwards !

Clam diggers using their unique 'Feel by Foot' Style
First walk after the (almost)seamless transition from APAPS. Even less of the usual suspects here for various reasons - wounded, unavoidable appointments, friends visiting , but mainly inertia as often is the case.
A very rare occurrence as Myriam volunteered for about the 3rd time in living memory to lead. You certainly shouldn't have missed getting the badge for this one. The jeopardy; the banter: the bravery. Anyway they all made it back to Bar Quim almost exactly as scheduled where a grumpy Elise and an overlaidback waiter, (remember the one that provided Yves with a beer salad last time) awaited the triumphant leader and her cohorts.
Just Follow That Leader
I won't spoil the tale of the tape with undue flower and gramacrobatics, so here is the story in the Leader's own words:-
*Wood* you like to take a walk?
On the Boardwalk - Denis, Dorothy, John and Hazel + leader behind camera.
Instead of the usual music, i thought I would add a vid of the warm up. None of the WAGS would let me film them so I had to use Stunt doubles!
Compulsory WAGS warm up for walks led by Myriam, Hazel, Dorothy or Samantha (If it doesn't show click 'Play on Youtube')
4 brave souls gathered at the Lagos railway station ready to be led astray.
Paul arrived also to wish them good luck. (They night need it!!)
It was a bit hazy, but the temperature was already about 27°C!!
The starter photo was taken at the Cat Hotel. From there, we got on the boardwalk which was not fully completed last time the WAGs walked there. Now it is safe, smooth and wide.
Myriam meets a couple of 'school friends'!
The Lagos Câmara claimed that the total length, including all the fingers branching out to the beach, was 9 km!! It took us an hour to cover only the straight length.
You tak' the high road and we'll tak' the low road!
On the way, we met people walking in many varieties of apparel or riding on different types of wheels. A great place to walk, especially for those who have mobility problems. (unless they REALLY have mobility problems and cannot walk)
Sanding the bannister to prevent high-roaders getting splinters in their feet! - they think of everything!
Taking a break
Sr Fernando filling old water bottles bottles with sand. He invited Myriam to pick his Nesperas next season.
(and that is NOT an innuendo)
Sr. Fernando's garden wall
The garden on the other side of the Boardwalk
At the end of the boardwalk, there are 2 beach bars and toilet facilities.
From there, we took off our shoes and walked along the water line.
Large jellyfish ---- A Chinese delicacy
It would have taken 30 minutes to reach the very end of the beach before turning inland. But the sea- shell-picking dedication prompted the leader to turn inland earlier.
Uma Barrigada das Conchas
Is it a bird....?
I see nothing
It was at least this big......
Soon we passed the oyster farm and were at the shores of the lagoon. The terrain was a bit muddy, so we decided to put on our shoes.
Then we were at the Palmares golf course. Nothing eventful happened there. No one got hit by balls! (nor even in them)
By the time we reached Bar Quim, it was well past 12.30. Rod and Paul were waiting anxiously, worrying that we were lost!
Looking worried........
......until their food arrived
The whole café was full to the extent that the waiters found it difficult to serve satisfactorily.
At the end, everyone of us got our order correct. Even the different sorts of coffees arrived correctly!
There were the "pingada", "cheio", "com leite" and *"escuro"*!!
(Dorothy was particularly amused b the pronunciation of 'ESCURO', and took great delight in shouting it out at all the men in the group!!)
The only hiccup was the Cappuccino!!
"Cappuccino com leite" OR "Cappuccino com natas" !!
Paulo, the waiter, told Dorothy that she had a good value cappuccino, "com leite" AND "com natas" !! No extra charge!!
Myriam brought along a pomelo for dessert
It was a good morning, among old friends. (OLD!! - que?)
Always ready for the beach - fully equipped
By the time we left, it was nearly 3 pm.
Dorathy and Dennis, the beach lovers decided to stay there to enjoy the beach a bit longer. Their car is permanently loaded with beach gear! Always ready for action!
Thank you for coming. I am pleased no one got lost!
Thank you Myriam. Now for the stats:
The route: Cat Hotel to Bar Quim via Bar Quim
And in conclusion a different Boardwalk song.
A BOARDWALK: A quick stroll might take longer than usual!
These blogs have, from their very outset, adhered to two inviolable principles – the first, always to avoid politics, and the second ( as Yves will doubtless testify), never to take the mickey out of the French. However, over these past few weeks, it has become impossible to resist the temptation to override those principles. First, there has been the example of M. Le Président Micron who keeps losing his Prime Ministers and then he loses France´s Napoleonic crown jewels. But we will not dwell on him. Then there was the sight of ex-Président M. N (for Napoleon) Sarkozy, marching off to La Bastille to the strains of La Marseillaise, convicted of trying to borrow money from a dictatorial Libyan called Gaddafi. (For heaven´s sake – no British high-up would ever dream of trying such a thing!) But was that a crime? If so, it illustrates the difference between British and French law. In Britain, one can do what one likes unless there is a law against it; in France, one can only do ...
On the first walk of the new WAGS season, we were well entertained by the Bensafrim Air Show. Although without the variety of aircraft one can expect to see at the Farnborough or Paris Air Shows, we were treated to a non-stop flying display for nigh on 3 hours. And we spent a great part of that time in waving our cameras at the sky, with varying degrees of success, it not being at all easy to pick out a small plane in the viewfinders of miniature cameras and mobile phones. We really needed the expertise of the absent Yves, with all his airshow experience and professional camera equipment to get the best shots. The Leader´s report has found its way to the Blogger with unsurpassed speed this week so here it is, plus a few editorial insertions. "The western Algarve was all action in view of the quite serious fire between Aljezur and B. de São João...but having checked that Bensafrim was clear of smoke...blowing well to the west in fact, we, John & Hazel, Antje, Myriam, Polly...
The Walk At the appointed hour of 09.30 am, there were only three of us. Were the others overly concerned about getting wet in some rain? The skies above Para e Fica were blue. The Acu-weather forecast was positive. But then, five minutes later, both Lesley and Yves arrived, so we were able to have a reasonably respectable Starter pic and to set off by 10.05 am. The first part of the walk was steadily up hill. Mercifully, the pace was slow, partly because Hazel´s mobile had been playing up, not been receiving inward calls, and fixing this, which was accomplished on the hoof, thanks to a solution proposed by Maria, meant more frequent pauses than is usual, even on a WAGS walk. During these technical breaks, Lesley busied herself identifying bird calls on her mobile bird song App. She told us proudly that she had identified a Dartford Warbler. None of us were much the wiser at the time, but subsequently Wikepaedia research informs us that Dartford is a town in Kent whe...
