WAGS 22 05 2024: Poço Frito Again - More Snails But No Strawberries

This was the third walk in a row led by Hazel. This time, as a now experienced Leader, she had armed herself with a map and had engaged a local guide, just in case. We were honoured by the presence of Ingrid, who had come down from her mountain fastness although whether it was just for the pleasure of our company or in the expectation of buying another supply of strawberries, she did not let on.  We were also joined by Caroline, Chris Davis´s niece.
The Starters: JohnH, Ingrid,Caroline, Chris, Rachel, Hazel and Maria.

The photography was not up to much, given the absence of both Tanja and Yves whose inventive camera skills were much missed. Some dull shots of the on-going building works in Poço Frito/Caravelas and little more is this week´s offering.

Next time, it will be paved

Just look at that !

If Ingrid was after strawberries, she was out of luck......

Strawberry Fields no more

None of our horticultural experts could say what had been planted in their stead.

I was however told that these were maracujás (passion fruit.)

A family photograph

After some fairly gentle walking, we spotted a man doing some grafting to his orange trees.

Chris thereupon disappeared into the orange grove to pick up some advice on grafting techniques from him and this gave the rest of us ample time to shade under a healthy looking carob tree,

Resuming our stroll, we were greeted by an enthusiastic hound who was revelling in acres of space to bound around in.

The pace continued to be gentle, as Maria was busy collecting snails again, but this certainly suited your scribe.

Maria´s "catch"

We then left the track in order to avoid some crop spraying and took a short cut through an orange grove-

and this led us back to Poço Frito and Cafe Martins in good time for lunch.

The Lunch

Here, Ingrid left us but we were joined by Rod who regaled us with tales of his Hebridean cruise, on a vessel originally built in Portugal and with some of the origin al crew still on it.

The food was up to the usual high Café Martins standard, with Maria persuading them to provide omelettes for Caroline and Rachel as a special favour..

There was also veal stew and mash...

and arroz de pat´.....

.......and a couple of very acceptable puds.

and when the time came for us to pay, we found that the whole lunch bill had been met by an anonymous benefactor. He knows who he is. Asanta sana, Bwana; tafadhali njoo tena."

For our Closing Music, one more from the Walking Tunes collection
