WAGS 11.09 2024: A Fragmented Alvor Boardwalk

A fragmented walk indeed because, as the Leader explains, we didn´t actually walk together for most of the time but split into couples, trios , quartets and also a brace of solitaries.

. Here is Rod´s report:-

A superior turnout indeed for the first September event; John & Hazel, Antje, Maria, Lesley, Paul plus Myriam and Louisa, Yves, Hilke and Rod all appeared on time at the Alvor Municipal Pool Café.

Well, in the event, it was indeed the only time that the afore-mentioned company all met together, for by lunchtime we had lost three, Hilke, Yves and Lesley and gained one, Chris. As for the ambulatory part of the event, of lesser importance, anyway, these days, it would seem that at no point did the assembled company actually assemble.  We did indeed set off more or less together until we reached the first option point...either to go west along the beach or stick to the boardwalk for any who might be uncomfortable on soft sand (the tide was high although just on the ebb).

Splitting up already.

(Note that Yves is focusing his camera on Paul´s torso.)

Paul´s Attendants

(and this is what Yves´s camera zoomed in on said torso - Paul´s RAF Wings tattoo. Paul was awarded his wings 55 + years ago.)

"Flying High" or "The Only Way To Fly"

Well, that was the last we altogether saw of each other (until lunch anyway..not to sound too dramatic!). Those that went along the beach dispersed over half a kilometer.

Yves forgets that it takes two to tango

A large stretch of beach had been cordoned off to protect nesting bird life

"Is it Superman?"

A modest few of those in front met up with some of the boardwalkers and ventured along the breakwater to the lighthouse.

From there the majority returned in their own way..along the main track and boardwalk. The proposal we should return along the inside lagoon beach was rejected by most as the tide was likely too high. In the event it wasn't and  there was plenty of firm, level sand. Only Maria and Rod enjoyed this stretch...pity really as this is always one of the best parts of a walk here. Having covered a not overly energetic 5k (give or take a couple of hundred meters) nobody seemed keen on extending the walk any further east so we wandered back to the café for an early lunch....a  critique of which I will leave to the gourmet members.

The Track and the Statistics (Well, JohnH´s track and Statistics at any rate; the Leader´s details are top-secret apparently)

The Lunch

Lesley, Yves and Hilke turned their noses up at the simple food on offer at the café and left us to it, presumably making their way to some bijou epicurean retreat for a proper meal. The rest of us made do with mere sandwiches which, plebeian fare though it was, nevertheless took a considerable amount of time and care in the choosing thereof. We were guided in our choice of breads by the knowledgeable sommelier-cum-proprietor. Pap sec were dismissed in favour of what I gather is called Pao de Forno Mistura (?) and that resulted in a most acceptable standard of bifana:

There was a well-grilled tosta mista:

and a very elegant tuna-salad baguette:

And our dining experience was excitingly enhanced when a mustard dispenser exploded in Chris´s hand:

No harm done.

Comments

  1. I do feel that a more sensitive editor may have cropped my photo so that the tricky shadows didn't make it seem as if I needed a 'D' cup! Indeed it will only have inspired jealousy among most WAGettes in their unending pursuit of equality.
Yves supposedly took the photo to highlight my recent RAF wings replica tattoo, which I had crafted to commemorate the 55th Anniversary OF my being awarded such at RAF Cranwell. I feel betrayed.
