The Lunch

(Thanks to Antje, Hazel, Maria and Myriam for photographic input.)

In the middle of lunch, Myriam suddenly announced, à propos de rien, that Turandot was now 100 years old, Puccini´s opera having had its first performance on 25th April 1926. This, you will all be delighted to know, gives me an excuse to play "Nessun Dorma" as our closing music. Pavarotti made this aria popularly famous with his recording of it for the 1990 football World Cup, but I will use one by that same promising younger tenor who featured in last week´s blog. What they will use for this year´s 2026 World Cup I have no idea.

To use an English idiom, he made a fair fist of that.

Comments

  1. When Turandot was first performed in Beijing some 30 years ago, all the shows were totally sold. The audience loved it! One of the reasons was probably that Puccini used the tunes from an ancient popular Chinese folk song, Jasmine Flowers, in some of the arias and as the leitmotif for Turandot. The first song in Act 1, sung by the children is "Là, sui monti dell'Est, is based on this folk song.
